  1. Athletics is competitive track and field
  2. events consisting of running, throwing, and
  3. jumping disciplines. Running events range 
  4. from sprint races such as the 100 metres and
  5. hurdles to the marathon which is 26 miles in
  6. length. Jumping events are the high jump, 
  7. long jump, and for men only, the triple jump
  8. and pole vault. Throwing events are javelin,
  9. discus, shot put, and for men only, the 
  10. hammer throw. The World Olympics are held
  11. every four years (1988, 1992, 1996 and 2000).
